40 starter homes and 4 4 bed homes at Waverley, Rotherham. A sensitively dense new urban housing concept
Yorkshire Variety Awards Finalist
Based on the Back-to-Back housing concept created CODA - ‘Sky-House’ is derived from the houses unique roof gardens and expansive glazing creating homes that are bright, airy and spacious with unrivalled views from every level.
This development of 44 homes is the first ‘Sky-House’ scheme and will comprise the first of four phases that is expected to deliver up to 200 starter homes. Four blocks of houses enclose a central landscaped garden and secure parking area that will herald one of the most unique new build developments in the region creating unrivalled light and space for starter homes.
The design also takes reference from the regions industrial past with the saw toothed roofs in a sensitive contemporary style further echoing the more recent contemporary commercial developments at the adjacent Advanced Manufacturing Park.
The site is superbly located adjacent to the new Waverley Town Centre and all the amenities it will offer in an almost equidistant position between Rotherham, Sheffield and Meadowhall.
This was a great project to work on but one that came with a set of very specific challenges. Not only was there the site’s past, which everybody was determined had to be preserved, but there was also the fact that we had to create two family homes in what is actually quite a small space. We came up with a design that filled all Nik and Jon’s wishes, a brilliantly contemporary pair of properties that also pays tribute to the story of the site and, through the use of materials, to the bigger story of Sheffield’s industrial heritage.
The 80-metre dam, which once provided power for the corn mill, has also been cleaned and restored, providing a haven for kingfishers and other wildlife.
